My complete adult career has been immersed in pop culture!
I appeared for 10 seasons as an on-air appraiser of sports, entertainment, pop culture & general collectibles on the PBS seriesAntiques Roadshow.
Employed at CBS TV, Universal Studios & ABC TV, gave me a strong foundation in the entertainment world, working my way up as a television executive for Dramatic Series Development, creating series ideas with writers, directors & producers. I retain some of my longtime contacts which helped result in the handling of Sylvester Stallone’s movie memorabilia collection, “STALLONE – THE AUCTION.”
As early as the late 1960s I began buying, playing, trading & selling “old” guitars before the business eventually blossomed into the “vintage guitar” business. This groundwork plus my auction background gave me the opportunity to become Consignment Director for Heritage Auctions Vintage Guitar department for 10 years.
Collecting sports memorabilia since my first card show in 1979 had grown to such a passion that I switched into the sports memorabilia business and have since coupled sports, entertainment & musical instruments into my expertise. Was brought national prominence in the mid-1980s when I purchased the Alexander Cartwright collection, the founder of baseball. Started Mike Gutierrez Actions & ran it successfully for 10 years. Along the way appraised some important collections & authenticated autographs for PSA & JSA. Joined Heritage Auctions, where I have brought some auction highlights in other areas as: coins, jewelry, movie posters, silver, watches, animation art & wine since 2006.

APPRAISERS QUALIFICATIONS
Member, International Society of Appraisers (ISA) since June 26, 2018. Member # 6061844.
Mike successfully completed the 40-hour examination ISA Core Class on October 7, 2018 and 7-hour requalification course in August 2022 for 2023-2027. Also completed the 15-hour course and examination on the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) on January 11, 2019 and 7-hour requalification for 2020-2023. Upgraded appraiser qualification status to ISA-AM on April 22, 2023.
BACKGROUND
1976 to 1978 - CBS Television City - Hollywood, CA.
Guest Relations – As a page, worked on Variety, Comedy, Game shows & Specials that included: Price is Right (head page), The Carol Burnett Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The CBS 50thAnniversary Show (Production assistant). I assisted on nearly 50 different productions during tenure.
1978 to 1980 - MCA Universal Studios – Studio City, CA.
Coordinator – Movie &TV Budget Department Executive, Television Development – Assisted VP, Nancy Dockery in presenting comedy, drama and specials with studio producers, directors & writers directed at selling to ABC Television.
1980-1981 - ABC Television – Century City, CA.
Executive, Drama Series Development – Convened with writers, producers, & studio executives to determine shows to be placed into drama series development.
1982 to 1995 - Mike Gutierrez Sports
Nationally recognized independent buyer, seller, autograph authenticator and appraiser in the sports memorabilia field supporting collectors & dealers.
1995 to 2006 - Mike Gutierrez Auctions
Developed & operated an international sports auction house dedicated mainly to sports & entertainment autographs & memorabilia.
2004 to 2013 - Antiques Roadshow– PBS Television
Appeared as an on-air appraiser of sports, entertainment, pop culture & general collectibles.
2006 to 2019 - Consultant & Consignment Director - Heritage Auctions, Dallas, Texas.
Acquiring consignments in several departments including: sports memorabilia, entertainment, and musical instruments, coins, jewelry, movie posters, silver, watches, animation art & wine.
2009 through 2019 - Consignment Director, Musical Instruments Department- Heritage Auctions, Dallas, Texas.
2009 through 2018. Developed & acquired instruments for two international auctions a year primarily highlighting electric, acoustic and celebrity owned guitars & memorabilia.

Owner, Pop Culture Appraisals, LLC – Accredited USPAP appraiser with member credentials from International Society of Appraisers (ISA) specializing in Sports, Entertainment, Rock ‘N’ Roll and Musical Instruments.
